Firefighters have one of the most demanding and stressful jobs in the country. In fact, 1 in 5 firefighters suffers from ptsd, anxiety, or depression.

Today, firefighters are fighting stress by taking yoga. Sounds funny, but it’s true. A recent article by Good News Network describes how yoga teacher, Olivia Kvitne Mead, is taking her practice to local fire stations as a way to combat workplace stress.

Yoga works as a self soothing technique, reducing the impact of exaggerated stress responses. And it seems to work great for these firefighters.

The Benefit of a Wellness Visit

With such a demanding job, it’s important for firefighters to stay healthy. A regular wellness visit ensures both health and safety.

Since 2017, fire departments in Philadelphia and Cleveland have partnered with NDS Wellness to provide Mobile Wellness Units to their fire stations. These clinics bring annual wellness visits directly to their work locations, identifying illnesses and chronic diseases early.

NDS mobile clinics make it easier than ever for firefighters to have a doctor check them for lung disease, musculoskeletal injuries, cancer, and behavioral health issues.

It’s more effective and less expensive to prevent illnesses than to treat them. Fire departments have found that having mobile wellness units right on site encourages their team members to utilize covered insurance benefits. It also improves productivity and can help reduce healthcare costs.

Physicians and licensed practitioners administer our annual wellness visits onsite up to 24 hours a day. This means healthcare is available to all shifts. Firefighters aren’t faced with taking a day off of work to utilize the covered benefit.

NDS Wellness isn’t offering yoga classes, yet. We will, however, ensure your fire department receives the best healthcare possible.
