Firefighter Ultrasound Screening

Firefighter Cardiac and Cancer Screenings

At NDS Wellness, we understand that health screenings are personal. Your questions about our ultrasound screening program matter to us, which is why we’ve compiled the most frequently asked questions from first responders and their families.

Our preventative screening program is designed to detect potential health concerns early, when they’re most treatable. We prioritize your privacy, convenience, and peace of mind throughout the entire process.

Frequently Asked Questions

What tests are performed during the ultrasound exam?
  • Echocardiogram: Measures blood pumping efficiency and visualizes heart muscle structure
  • Carotid Artery: Assesses blood flow and detects signs of narrowing or plaque buildup
  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm: Detects any enlargement of the aorta, the main blood vessel delivering blood to your body
  • Thyroid: Examines structure and can detect abnormalities such as nodules or cancer
  • Complete Abdominal Ultrasound: Includes liver, spleen, gallbladder, kidney, and bladder examination for structural abnormalities
  • Testicular (male): Detects potential lumps or abnormalities
  • Pelvic (female): Visualizes pelvic organs including uterus, ovaries, and fallopian tubes for abnormalities
Will the technician notify me if they see anything concerning?

No. While NDS technologists are certified diagnostic sonographers, all images are sent to a Cardiologist and Radiologist who interpret the results professionally. This ensures you receive accurate, properly analyzed information.

Is there preparation required for the test?

Yes, for the best results:

  • Fast for 6-8 hours prior to the exam for optimal visualization of organs
  • For the bladder ultrasound, drink 32 oz of water one hour before your appointment (we can scan this organ first so you can relieve your bladder before completing the remainder of the exam)
How long does the screening take?

Approximately 30 minutes.

How will I receive my results?

NDS will securely email your report directly to you. If there are any abnormal results (highlighted in red), one of our NDS healthcare providers will personally reach out to review the results and advise you on any recommended follow-up with your primary care physician.

How long does it take to receive results?

Images are reviewed by both a Radiologist and Cardiologist, so typical turnaround time is 1-2 weeks, though results may be available sooner.

Will my results be disclosed to my department?

NO. This program is 100% private, and your results remain confidential. Your personal health information is protected under HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and will never be shared with your department.

How long will NDS be scheduled onsite for this program?

Screenings are voluntary, but based on eligible members, we expect to be on-site for at least a full 4 weeks to accommodate everyone.

Can I get copies of my ultrasound images?

Yes, images can be provided if needed or requested by your doctor.
