NFPA 1582 Physicals, Delivered at Your Station
Meeting the Standard Without Leaving the Station
Getting a whole department through annual medical evaluations usually means pulling crews off shift and sending them across town, one or two at a time, for weeks. An NFPA 1582 physical is a comprehensive occupational medical evaluation covering cardiovascular health, pulmonary function, vision, hearing, and the conditions that affect whether a firefighter can safely perform essential job tasks. We bring that exam to your station instead
NFPA 1582 has been consolidated into NFPA 1580.
What Makes Our Approach Different
Physician-Led Care
Every screening is conducted by healthcare professionals and reviewed by physicians who explain the results in person and provide personalized recommendations for follow-up care. Your people meet a clinician, not a kiosk.
Comprehensive Testing
From cancer screening to cardiovascular health, we test for the specific risks your workforce carries. A visit can include a full physical, a 12-lead EKG, comprehensive blood work, and a skin review.
Built for Your Schedule
We work around your shifts and your site. Mobile wellness clinics set up in your parking lot, at your plant, or at your station, and reach first, second, and third shift.
Customized to Your Needs
Every organization is different. We design your screening program with you, whether you run a plant, a fire department, or a police department, built around your specific concerns and budget.

What an NFPA 1582 Exam Actually Covers
The evaluation covers a complete medical history and physical, cardiovascular assessment including a 12-lead EKG, pulmonary function testing, vision and hearing screening, and comprehensive blood work. We add cancer screening matched to firefighter exposure risks, because the carcinogens your crew meets on the fireground do not show up on a standard physical.
No Crew Leaves the Station
We arrive in a mobile wellness clinic and set up in your apparatus bay or lot. No appointments to schedule, no travel, no coverage gaps while members drive across town. We work first, second, and third shift, so the whole roster gets evaluated, including the crew that always gets missed.
Where NFPA 1582 Stands Today
NFPA 1582 has been consolidated into NFPA 1580, the Standard for Emergency Responder Occupational Health and Wellness, which also absorbed the infection control, fitness, and rehabilitation standards. The 2022 edition of 1582 remains in effect during the transition. We align our station exams with the standard. NFPA itself does not enforce it, though some states adopt it in rule.
A Finding Becomes a Next Step
A physician reviews the results with each member in person rather than mailing a report. Detailed medical information stays confidential with the clinician, while the department receives what it needs on fitness for duty. When something needs attention, we coordinate the referral and follow-up so it does not stall.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is an NFPA 1582 physical?
An NFPA 1582 physical is a comprehensive occupational medical evaluation for firefighters, defined by the National Fire Protection Association standard of that name. It assesses cardiovascular, pulmonary, vision, hearing, and other systems against the essential job tasks of firefighting, to determine whether a member can perform them safely.
Is NFPA 1582 still the current standard?
Not as a standalone document. NFPA consolidated it into NFPA 1580, the Standard for Emergency Responder Occupational Health and Wellness, released in its 2025 edition. The 2022 edition of NFPA 1582 remains in effect during the transition period while departments update policies and references.
What conditions can disqualify a firefighter under NFPA 1582?
The standard groups conditions by whether they would prevent a member from safely performing essential job tasks, or could depending on severity. A physician evaluates each case individually against those tasks. It is a medical judgment about safe performance, not an automatic list of exclusions.
What is NFPA 1583?
NFPA 1583 was the Standard on Health-Related Fitness Programs for Fire Department Members, covering fitness assessment and exercise programming. Like 1582, it has been consolidated into NFPA 1580, which now brings medical evaluation, fitness, infection control, and rehabilitation together in a single document.
How often do firefighters need a medical evaluation?
Annual medical evaluation is the standard for firefighters, with additional evaluation after a significant exposure, an injury, or an extended absence from duty. Your department’s cadence may also be set by state rule, local policy, or a collective agreement.
Can NDS Wellness deliver these exams at our station?
Yes. We bring a mobile wellness clinic to your station and evaluate members across every shift, so nobody drives across town and no company goes short. A physician conducts the exam, explains the results in person, and coordinates any follow-up care that is needed.
