Firefighter Health & Wellness: Because Early Detection Saves Lives

Firefighters Face a Hidden Enemy

Firefighters Face a Hidden Enemy

The gear protects you from the flames. But what about what you can’t see? Firefighters have significantly higher rates of cancer than the general population—caused by repeated exposure to carcinogens in smoke, heat, and toxic substances. Testicular cancer, mesothelioma, and multiple myeloma rates are elevated. Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma and prostate cancer are more common.

But here’s what we know: Early detection changes everything.

Healthcare That Meets Firefighters Where They Are

NDS Wellness brings comprehensive physician-led screenings directly to your station. This isn’t a basic biometric screening with a finger prick and a blood pressure cuff. These are real 30-minute appointments with physicians and diagnostic testing—the kind of preventive care that can be covered by health insurance but rarely happens because firefighters don’t have time to schedule it.

We remove every barrier to participation

No appointments to schedule. No time off needed. No driving across town to a clinic. We bring mobile wellness clinics right to your station, available for all shifts, so your crew can prioritize their health without disrupting operations.

What Makes Our Approach Different

Physician-Led Care

Every screening is conducted by healthcare professionals and reviewed by physicians who provide personalized recommendations for follow-up care.

Comprehensive Testing

From cancer screening to cardiovascular health to NFPA-compliant testing, we address the specific health risks firefighters face.

Built for Your Schedule

We work around your shifts and your station. Our mobile clinics set up onsite and accommodate firefighters across all watches.

Customized to Your Needs

Every department is different. We’ll work with you and your firefighter association to design a screening program that addresses your specific concerns and budget.ific concerns and budget.

Our Two-Part Firefighter Health Program

Designed specifically for the unique health risks facing firefighters, our program delivers thorough screening and prevention in two efficient parts:

Part 1
Advanced Blood Analysis

Our comprehensive 40-panel blood work goes far beyond standard lab work, screening for early signs of cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and other serious conditions. Customized panels available based on your department’s needs.

  • Chemistry Panel: Screens for Liver Cancer, Biliary Cancer, Diabetes, Gout, Kidney Function, Anemia and Liver Disorders
  • Complete Blood Count (CBC): Screens for Lymphoma, Leukemia, Anemia and Other Blood Disorders
  • Lipid Panel: Screening for Cardiovascular Risk
  • Complete Urinalysis: Screens for Bladder and Kidney Cancers
  • Additional Specialized Testing

Part 2
Complete Health Assessment

This is where early detection happens. Firefighters receive a full diagnostic workup that catches problems before they become life-threatening.

Complete Physical Examination

A thorough head-to-toe assessment by a physician who takes the time to actually listen:

Hands-On Physical Examination

  • Vital Signs: Temperature, pulse, respiration, blood pressure
  • Head, Neck, Eyes, Ears, Nose and Throat: Complete examination
  • Cardiovascular: Inspection, auscultation (listening), percussion, palpation
  • Pulmonary: Comprehensive lung examination
  • Gastrointestinal: Abdominal examination for organ abnormalities
  • Genitourinary: Hernia examination
  • Lymph Nodes: Evaluation of cervical, axillary, and inguinal regions
  • Neurological: Mental status evaluation and assessment of cranial/peripheral nerves (motor, sensory, reflexes)
  • Musculoskeletal: Range of motion assessment for all joints, mobility and function testing

Personalized Health Education

Based on your specific results, you’ll receive tailored guidance on diet, exercise, stress management, and lifestyle changes that can make a real difference.
Mental Health

Mental Wellness Screening

The job takes a toll that isn’t always visible. We include confidential mental health screening because your emotional wellbeing matters as much as your physical health.

NFPA Components

Our program includes testing aligned with NFPA 1582 standards for firefighter occupational health:

Vision Testing

Comprehensive evaluation of distance, near, peripheral, and color vision to ensure you meet the visual requirements for firefighting duties.

Hearing Assessment

Audiometric testing to detect hearing loss that may impact safety and job performance.

Pulmonary Function Test (PFT/Spirometry)

Measures lung capacity and function to detect early signs of respiratory disease or damage from smoke exposure.

Chest X-Ray

Baseline and follow-up imaging to monitor lung health and detect abnormalities.

Comprehensive Cardiovascular Screening

Heart disease remains a leading cause of line-of-duty deaths. Our cardiac screening provides a complete picture:

12-Lead EKG

Evaluates heart rhythm, detects arrhythmias, and identifies signs of previous heart attacks or current heart strain.

Stress Test with Cardiologist Interpretation

Assesses how your heart performs under physical stress, revealing problems that don’t show up at rest. Includes VO2 max calculation to measure cardiovascular fitness.
Echocardiogram

Echocardiogram (Heart Ultrasound)

Visualizes the heart’s structure and function in real-time. This ultrasound reveals:

  • Heart valve function
  • Chamber size and wall thickness
  • Pumping strength and efficiency
  • Fluid around the heart
  • Congenital heart defects
Artery Ultrasound

Carotid Artery Ultrasound

Examines the major arteries in your neck that supply blood to the brain. Detects dangerous plaque buildup that could lead to stroke—often before you have any symptoms.
abdominal-aorta-screening

Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm (AAA) Screening

Checks for dangerous bulges in the body’s largest artery. AAAs often have no symptoms until they rupture, which is fatal 80% of the time. Early detection saves lives.

Cancer Detection

Firefighters face elevated cancer risk from occupational exposure. Our comprehensive cancer screening catches problems early when they’re most treatable:

Full-body

Full-Body Skin Cancer Screening

A trained physician examines your entire body for suspicious moles, lesions, or skin changes that could indicate melanoma or other skin cancers.

Complete Abdominal Ultrasound

This painless ultrasound examination provides a thorough evaluation of your internal organs:
  • Liver: Screens for liver cancer, cirrhosis, fatty liver disease, cysts, and masses
  • Kidneys: Detects kidney cancer, stones, cysts, and structural abnormalities
  • Pancreas: Identifies pancreatic cancer, cysts, and inflammation
  • Gallbladder: Finds gallstones, polyps, and signs of disease
  • Spleen: Checks for enlargement and abnormalities
  • Bladder: Screens for tumors and structural issues

Thyroid Ultrasound

Examines the thyroid gland for nodules, cysts, or enlargement that could indicate thyroid disease or cancer.

Every Firefighter Receives

Detailed written reports from both Radiologist and Cardiologist
Consultation with Nurse Practitioner for any positive findings
Physician-directed recommendations for medical follow-up
Follow-up care coordination for abnormal findings
All testing completed onsite at your station
Scheduling that works for all shifts

Early Detection Saved This Firefighter’s Life

Jack Kamps from Local 734 in Baltimore decided to get screened after his wife died from lung cancer. The scan revealed a 5cm mass on his kidney. He was told it was likely cancer that had metastasized to his lungs and he probably had 10 years to live.

After surgery to remove the tumor and save his kidney, follow-up scans showed no change in the lung nodules. He got the “all clear” from his oncologist.

“Brothers and sisters, if you love your spouses, your children and yourself, GET THE SCAN! You’re in and out in 45 min. You are the best advocate for your own health. I was lucky—this scan saved my life!”
